About Aqualibrium Competition
The beginning...
The idea for the competition originated from a group of third year civil engineering students at the University of Johannesburg in response to a challenge given to them by Prof Kobus Van Zyl.
The group consisted of Werner Nel, Walter Rautenbach, Dennis Kriek, André Lourens, Bruce Greyvenstein and Heinz Lösch.
First winners...
The competition was fully developed for the centenary celebrations of both the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) and Rand Water (the largest bulk water supplier in South Africa) in 2003, to help inform the public of the importance of water supply and the role civil engineers play in this process.
And now...
The competition proved to be so popular that it's become an annual event in the SAICE calendar. Regional competitions are organised by SAICE branches and regional winners compete in the nationals finals held every spring.
Aqualibrium has also been stablish as a regular project for the third year students doing the Hydraulic Engineering course at the University of Cape Town. To give students exposure to practical water distribution modelling, design and calibration. Student feedback on the competition has been very positive.
